October Newsletter

Hello again, Flower Friends,

Whenever I begin harvesting, I only hear my own activities: rummaging in the back of the car for my snips and buckets, dragging the hose around, opening the gate, and water filling the buckets.

There seem to be no other sounds. I don’t know whether this is because I’m not paying attention or because the creatures have all stopped to listen to me, to see what I might get up to.

Once my own movements fall into a quiet rhythm, however, nature’s sounds come alive, and I simply listen to the soundscape of the garden.

It is multi-layered.

There’s the mechanical drone of background traffic and leaf blowers and such; there are the raucous cries of the bigger birds; the distinctive sound of raven’s wings; the sweet trills and repetitive notes of unseen smaller birds; the buzz of bees of different sizes; and the howitzer sounds of hummingbirds passing by. The only sounds I add are an occasional rustle as I move through thick dahlias and the satisfying slice of sharp snips through a perfectly ripe dahlia stem.

This is one of the most rewarding aspects of flower farming: working quietly while birds and lizards and bees and the occasional rabbit do their own thing all around me. They soon seem to forget all about me. Like the time a hummingbird landed on the brim of my hat for a moment.  Or the times lizards scurry over my shoes. Or the many times I have to wake the bees early in the morning who are still sleeping in the flowers. I try to be gentle with them, knowing what it’s like to be awakened roughly.

So while the growing season is drawing to a close, we still have a few wonderful autumn weeks of dahlias, cosmos, zinnias, mums and assorted other blooms left to enjoy.  Yay!

And soon we begin our autumn chores to ready the garden for the spring.
